Terahertz Spectroscopy of Proteins

Abstract

We aim to study the vibrational modes of proteins, and more specifically, their interactions with their surrounding water in their native state using terahertz radiation and custom microfludics.
It has been shown that it is possible to probe protein interactions with their surrounding water as means of further understanding their function, but also as a detector of conformational change.
We aim to characterise proteins in this way and to explore the protein hydration dynamics when they are additionally stimulated/modified either before the measurements, or with the further use of microfludic channels, direct mixing.
A further possibility is to couple visible light with light sensitive proteins for time resolved analysis of protein folding in the terahertz band.
