Atomic data and spectral observations of the solar corona

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics

Abstract

Mr Roger Dufresne will carry out his PhD programme within the atomic astrophysics group at DAMTP.
The PhD programme will include becoming familiar with the atomic data that we provide to the astrophysics community to analyse spectral data. During the first part of the programme, the student will carry out a literature review and attend some
post-graduate courses (most likely part-III astrophysical fluids, and various programming/IT courses).
The student will then become familiar with current spectroscopic observations of the Sun, obtained with the Hinode and IRIS missions. The project will probably include improving the modeling of time-dependent ionisation in high-density plasma, which is relevant for the current IRIS mission and the upcoming (2019) Solar Orbiter SPICE spectrometer.
It could also include analysis of chemical abundance variations using pre-existing data from SoHO and Hinode, in preparation of new X-ray observations that will be carried out with a sounding rocket (MaGIXS), new UV observations with Solar Orbiter SPICE and new observations in the visible with DKIST.
