Abstract

I would like to enrol on this research course in order to further develop my range of research methods knowledge and experience. Having successfully completed an MPhil in the philosophy of physical education, and a further MA thesis in Olympism, embodiment and education, I am comfortable in theoretical and qualitative elements of research, from literature review, design to writing up. Additionally, I have taught research methods to undergraduate further education students for four years. During my MA I engaged in two modules which covered the spectrum of research options. I would welcome the depth of knowledge and relevance to education that this MRes course offers.
On completing two Masters' degrees - with a decade of being with our young family in between - I have a proven record of self-discipline, intrinsic motivation, capability for independent study. Alongside these academic capabilities, my work and personal life offer a range of transferable skills such as organisation, creativity in juggling multiple demands, time management and sincere professional ethic. Coupled with a desire to challenge my own thinking and that of others through my contribution to conferences and seminars, I think I am a strong candidate for further development and therefore, contribution to academic work post-doctoral studies.
Staff within the University of Stirling education department have supported me in applying first, for a PhD and second, for ESRC funding. Having secured this generous package of funding, ESRC have advised this year of MRes study. In order to exit the PhD with more than the research skills which I would adopt for my own study, I think that this MRes path will ensure I have a comprehensive set of skills, knowledge and practice in research methods. This is welcome for personal and professional motives.
