Chemical vapour deposition of group 14 chalcogenides

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Chemistry

Abstract

This project will develop new CVD reagents for growth of thin film tin sulfide and related semiconductors, with a focus on controlled multilayer deposition to enhance thermoelectric performance in energy generation and recovery. The student will also take an active involvement in depositions using ALD during their placements at the company.
We have deposited tin sulfides and selenides from SnCl4 complexes with thio-/seleno-ethers (Dalton Trans. (2007),4769; Chem. Mater. 24,(2012),4442; and unpublished work), with deposition of SnE or SnE2 determined by the substrate temperature during deposition. Initially, this project will investigate temperature variation as a strategy for SnS/SnS2 multilayer production from related precursors. The effect of other deposition conditions will be examined in more detail to control the film thickness and crystallite size/orientation.
