The effect of chemical composition, pretreatment and microstructure of the catalyst pellet on the mass transport characteristics

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

Abstract

The project will explore the effect of chemical composition, pretreatment and microstructure of the catalyst pellet on the mass transport characteristics relevant to catalyst preparation routes. The work will include an analysis of drying kinetics, wetting (e.g. impregnation/washcoating) and wicking. Furthermore, the project aims to investigate the use of terahertz spectroscopy and imaging as a method for determining catalyst porosity, non-destructively and quickly

Description - For the first time, terahertz pulsed imaging (TPI) was used for simultaneously investigating the liquid transport and swelling performance during the tablet disintegration of complex pharmaceutical formations. These formulations are used for patients with swallowing difficulties.
- TPI was also used for the first time to study the liquid transport kinetics of ceramic catalytic materials, i.e. a-alumina powder compacts, which revealed that, beside porosity, the surface properties of the solid catalytic material impact the water transport kinetics.
- X-ray computed microtomography (XµCT) can be used for the analysis of the microstructure properties of the inkjet-printed pharmaceuticals on porous substrates. The XµCT results revealed the high porosity of the substrate is optimal for inkjet printing.
- TPI was also used as a novel method to investigate the liquid transport of non-polar solvents, such as 1-octanol, into ceramic catalytic materials, i.e. a-alumina powder compacts. The results show the great potential of the TPI method for investigating the liquid transport kinetics of ceramic catalysts and catalyst supports.
Exploitation Route - Help the formulation scientists in the pharmaceutical industry design better solid dosage forms.
- Help the scientists in the catalysis field enhance the design and performance of heterogenous (solid) catalysts.
