Understanding Galaxy Evolution with VIDEO and MIGHTEE

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

The combination of optical, near-infrared and radio surveys covering the extragalactic deep fields have the potential to revolutionise our understanding of all phases of galaxy evolution, and how these are related to the underlying dark matter distribution. This project will use data from the new MeerKAT MIGHTEE survey, in combination with VIDEO near-infrared data, and available optical data to measure the evolution of star formation across all redshifts, how this relates to the stellar and halo mass.

If time permits then the student will also use the deep spectral line data from MIGHTEE to gain an understanding of how the gas supply to galaxies in the different haloes, is linked to the star formation rate. Towards the end of the PhD, the student will also have the opportunity to use LSST ComCam data over these fields, and aid in supplying mnew redshifts from HI for improving phortometric redshifts with LSST.

PI Contribution Provided assistance with conducting observations as a part of the DEVILS spectroscopic survey in Australia. This involved spending 6 months visiting collaborators in Q1/2 2019. Contributed towards the first data release of the DEVILS project and corresponding publication which is due in Q2 2020.
Collaborator Contribution Provided free access to a lecture course on the R programming language. Provided inside experience of new software being developed in-house at ICRAR (ProFound, ProFit & ProSpect) which will find great utility in the astronomical surveys being conducted by our group in Oxford.
Impact Journal Publication and online data release expected in Q2 2020.
