An Ethnographic Study of Homeless Women in Rural and Urban Spaces

Lead Research Organisation: Cardiff University
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

This research will investigate the embodied experiences of homeless women who encounter homelessness in rural and urban contexts. Taking an ethnographic approach, the study will explore women's experiences, interactions with service providers, and their multiple and complex needs in relation to how they intersect with rural and urban living situations. The research will seek to understand the differences and complexities of women's homeless biographies which often involves temporarily transitioning into and out of homelessness and service engagement (Casey,2002).

Research Questions
What are the historical and contemporary lived experiences of homeless women?
How do homeless women negotiate space?
How are rural and urban spaces interconnected in the context of female homelessness?
What are the vulnerabilities associated with women's homelessness and how are these located within patterns of (in)visibility in urban and rural spaces?
