Advanced Quantum Networking

Lead Research Organisation: University of York
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

I will participate in a large-scale project building the first, permanent, quantum secure, high speed (multi DWDM channel 100Gb/s) data network, linking various locations in Cambridge and Adastral Park, though I will be based in the latter. I will be involved in a wide range of research activities associated with the project and gain experience and training in highly secure communications. The work will be primarily experimental, including operation of both the data and quantum aspects of the network, carrying out a range of trials over the coming years.
There will be additional theoretical work, analysing combined quantum and classical system and network performance, assessing physical layer imperfections and limitations. Additionally, the experimental model will need to be compared to simulations built on computer models.
I have joined an existing team, spread between York, BT, and Cambridge, and be involved in first demonstrations of new quantum networking concepts such as short distance QKD and CV-QKD. I will also help with demonstrations of novel QKD-protected services, including interaction with other companies, making use of QKD. Finally, I will support the wide range of demonstration events both internally at BT but also around the country at exhibitions and conferences.
Further research questions involve:
- Management of key exchange and distribution to higher level services.
- The dynamic control of key distribution networks (Software Defined Networking, Network Function Virtualisation.)
- The importance of characterisation, standardisation, and metrology.
- Integration practicalities such as power mapping, automatic network planning.

Currently, I am exploring the wide range of avenues described above, intending to focus on a specific PhD topic by around March 2018.
