Phase and charging behaviour of complex 2D materials from first principles

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering & the Environment

Abstract

The project core objective is to relate macroscopic and nanoscale friction and wear of novel self-adaptive solid lubricant coatings. The results will be supported by testing of frictional properties of low-dimensional n(2D) sheets both prepared by chemical vapour deposition or directly collected from the worn surfaces. The ultimate aim is to tribological design of a new class of solid lubricants.

Description We build and teste a protocol to study how metals ions mix in 2D materials used for solid lubrication. We are building a roadmap based on computer simulation that would help experimentalists to choose how different materials would mix in real-case situation to form new compounds.
Exploitation Route Experimentalist can synthesise new materials based on our theoretical findings.
