'Methanol-based sorption refrigeration and heat pump technology' 1=Energy 2=Energy Efficiency

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

Solid sorption cycles have been researched for refrigeration, heat pumping and thermal transformers. Most systems to have reached an advanced state of development have used physical adsorption between for example ammonia and active
carbon or water and zeolite. In principle, chemical reactions of ammonia with metal chlorides, bromides etc. have many advantages but the lack of understanding regarding reaction rates, hysteresis, etc. have hampered development. this work
seeks to demonstrate that 2-salt resorprtion systems can be made at low cost and of adequate efficiency to be viable.

Description To date, understanding of the dynamic behaviour of our energy materials has been found,
a benchmark experiment has been designed for testing our energy material (salt in conductive ENG matrix)
basis for basic initial demonstration test of a working machine in hand
Exploitation Route When the project is finished could be moving from TRL 3-4
Subsequent PhD student will use the material to also advance TRL for heat pump tech,
Important for LoT-NET outputs
Can be advanced in projects to make a working device in the future
Sectors Agriculture, Food and Drink,Chemicals,Energy,Environment
