Abstract

Atomic Magnetometers hold the record sensitivity for measuring magnetic fields, enabling the measurement of extremely small signals, on the order of femtoTesla. Magnetic Induction Tomography (MIT) relies on a magnetic sensor to detect the secondary field from the measured material. Using atomic magnetometers can unlock vast performance improvements and enabling the ability to work in the low frequency regime, offering greater penetration of the test material. The PhD project will concern testing new atomic ensembles for the magnetometer, to optimise the performance of MIT. This will involve construction of new MIT setups and applications of them to industrial and security challenges.
