Signal and Imaging Processing for Enhanced Long Range Sensing

Abstract

The project will develop signal processing techniques to enhace long range sensing from aircraft. The applicability of the developed techniques to a range of application areas will be assessed.

The objectives are to:

1. Review the fundamentals of RF and EO sensing technologies and the implications of long range air borne systems.
2. Down select a specific system where signal processing has the potential to significantly enhance the detection system.
3. Identify relevant performance metrics for the sensing system
4. Explore signal processing techniques to be applied to the specific system and assess against the chosen metrics
5. The work will focus on improving the signal to noise ratio and investigate tecniques from Compressive Sensing to improve capture and data communiction efficiency.

PI Contribution The aims of this placement are to expand on a collaboration with the Computational Imaging and Data Science group at the University of Delaware and to develop techniques to perform object detection, discrimination and classification on compressed sensing data. This placement will provide the opportunity to build on an existing relationship and has the potential for future collaborations and publication. We have been in contact with the hosts for a number of years and this placement would provide an opportunity for both parties to utilize the experience offered by the other. The proposed activities are centred around building upon simulations carried out at the University of Strathclyde inspired by imaging hardware based at the University of Delaware. These simulations have proven highly positive and have validated the theory of performing common image analysis tasks in a compressed domain. The team at the University of Strathclyde has a great deal of experience in designing bespoke signal processing algorithms and we aim to combine our expertise with state-of-the-art imaging hardware.
Collaborator Contribution Professor Gonzalo Arce and his team at the University of Delaware are world leaders in compressive hyperspectral imaging and have a great deal of experience in designing and creating imaging hardware that captures compressed data about an imaged scene. The group has and is willing to grant access to, unique, bespoke hyperspectral compressed sensing imaging hardware that directly relates to my research topic and can be used to further the impact of my research. I will be fully embedded within the host group, able to personally, and more effectively, interact with researchers and doctoral students who themselves have experience with the hardware and can provide support.
Impact No outcomes have resulted yet but a visit to the University of Delaware is being planned and the work to be undertaken there will be of value for future publications.

Results and Impact Six senior figures from BAE Systems accompanied by university executives attended an exhibition day at the University highlighting some of the key partnerships between both parties. I was able to present a poster of my work to the CTO of BAE Systems and the other guests present and was able to engage and discuss my research with them.
