Abstract

The student will be involved in the analysis of data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. In particular, we aim to use the full Run-II dataset (taken between 2015 and 2018) to search for dark matter production in association with leptons, jets, and heavy flavour jets. This will involve the development of new observables and experimental methodology to enhance the measurement sensitivity. In addition, the student will help develop and maintain new tracking algorithms for use in the ATLAS High Level Trigger, enabling multithreading for the first time.

Description ATLAS Virtual Visits
Form Of Engagement Activity A talk or presentation
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach International
Primary Audience Schools
Results and Impact ATLAS experiment offers free Virtual Visits from any school that applies to the programme. The visit usually consists of a brief introduction to particle physics and activities done at CERN (5-10min) being presented right in front of ATLAS control room, followed by a video broadcast directly from the tunnel 100 meters below the ground, where the experiment is situated. The last item on the visit is usually at least 40min Q&A. In the years given above I have taken part in multiple virtual visits from schools various countries (The UK, Switzerland, Czech Republic).

Form Of Engagement Activity A talk or presentation
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach Regional
Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact IoP Festival of Physics took place in Edinburgh in October 2019. There was a live stream to CERN (Geneva Switzerland) during which visitors could ask us any questions regarding ATLAS, LHC, CERN or physics in general.
