Measuring the electron-neutrino cross section in MicroBooNE and SBND

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The student is working on the MicroBooNE experiment at Fermilab. His thesis will be on
the measurement of the electron neutrino-cross section on argon. He will make a precise
differential measurement using the full range of NuMI beam data in MicroBooNE. This is a
very important parameter as the electron-neutrino is the golden channel in oscillation
searches for sterile neutrinos in the Short Baseline Programme and CP-violation searches,
e.g. in the DUNE experiment.
He will spend some time at Fermilab on long term attachment, which will allow him to
work with experts on liquid argon reconstruction and beam properties. He will also
participate in the construction and commissioning of the light detection system Short
Baseline Near Detector (SBND), enabling him to gain crucial hardware experience in
LArTPC construction.

PI Contribution MicroBooNE is a neutrino oscillation experiment. The work from my PhD uses data from this experiment to measure the electron neutrino cross section on argon.
Collaborator Contribution MicroBooNE as an international collaboration has a wide range of expertise in neutrino physics. This has benefited my research significantly. MicroBooNE has also given me access to computing resources via Fermilab.
