Abstract

Brief description of the context of the research including potential impact

Ranking is used frequently in modern society, whether that be in understanding the relative influence of different actors in a particular system, determining preferences in a commercial environment, or determining the outcome of tournaments, broadly understood. By exploring the principles underlying different approaches and developing methods consistent with those, these practices may be made more meaningful, more efficient and fairer. It is anticipated that the methodological work undertaken may have a wide span of potential areas of impact, but will have a principle focus on educational assessment.

Aims and objectives

The research will aim to elaborate the principles underlying appropriate ranking methods and to develop novel methods to achieve and assess them, particularly as applied in educational assessment.

Novelty of research methodology

The PhD will consist of original explications of the principles underlying ranking methods and the development of novel statistical methods to make this ranking more transparent and efficient. Research will be in the context of specific real world problems.

Alignment to EPSRC strategy
In line with the Strategic Plan 2015, this research will contribute to 'developing our fundamental understanding of the world'. Given the wide scope of applicability it is hoped that there can be meaningful 'economic and social impact' based on this research.
