Data Acquisition, Triggering, and Physics prospects for the DUNE experiment

Lead Research Organisation: University of Bristol
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

This project is about development and optimisation of the data acquisition system and trigger for the DUNE experiment, informed by the analysis of protoDUNE data and detailed simulation studies. A focus of the physics and trigger work will be the optimisation of DUNE's sensitivity to supernova physics, as well as the development of early, pre-beam physics analyses. DUNE accumulates vast amounts of data, and modern "big data" analysis methods will be employed to process and analyses these data

PI Contribution Developing software for emulation of FPGA-based data-processing algorithms in upstream DAQ for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). This is being used for validation of front-end firmware algorithms and to do supernova burst trigger studies for the DUNE detector using these algorithms. I have also been supporting the ProtoDUNE experiment at CERN, which functions as an engineering test stand for the DUNE detector. I was on LTA from Oct 2018-July 2019 during which I was the University of Bristol's (UoB) on-site ProtoDUNE timing system expert. During ProtoDUNEs beam-run (Oct - Nov 2018) I was also on-call and undertook data-collection shifts. Additionally, I developed some software to monitor the offset between the beam instrumentation timing system and ProtoDUNEs timing system.
