Abstract

An experimental investigation into the tribological properties of polyurea-based greases, as well as other thickener bases. Physical and chemical analyses of the lubricant films will be performed. Working with Shell, this work will inform and contribute to the development of greases for high-speed applications such as with electric motors.

Description Methods to analyse lubricating performance of greases using low-cost bench tests have been developed which are an improvement over industry standard tests in showing friction behaviour. Infrared analysis to look at the chemical composition of greases has compared the bench tests to real bearings run under realistic conditions and shown that there are differences in the extent of shear degradation. This implies such bench tests should be improved in order to emulate bearings more closely.
Exploitation Route The bench test procedure may be adopted by lubricating grease manufacturers in order to develop low-friction greases.
