Magnetic dynamos and magnetic flux evolution in accretion disk turbulence

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics

Abstract

The dissipation caused by magnetic turbulence drives the intense luminosity of numerous accreting astrophysical bodies, active galactic nuclei most notably. Meanwhile, the turbulence influences several separate processes, such as planet formation, outflows, outbursts, warping, and magnetic flux transport. This project seeks to better characterise magnetic turbulence in accretion disk with large-scale numerical simulations on both local and national HPC facilities. Its main aim is to understand how the relatively small-scale turbulent motions create, sustain, and advect the large-scale magnetic fields essential for jet and outflow launching.
