Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Results and Impact I attended an open evening, in which PhD students were invited to perform outreach on their work, as part of "European researchers' Night", in a local museum.
I created a stall, which was attended by ~ 50 members of the public, most of them families with young children. I invited people's views about importance of our electrical power system, how they would feel about a power cut, and what activities they might stop doing / start doing if a power cut occurred. Children were encouraged to draw what they would do. I also gathered audience views about whether or not they might switch off an appliance at home to "help the grid" or to be more environmentally conscious - and if so, what they might switch off.

Results and Impact I gave a presentation - allowed to be only 3 minutes long - summarising the research challenge and my aims, as part of a competition. The presentation was targeted at a non-specialist audience. It was held at Strathclyde University. Most of the audience were students from all departments; the judges were professionals external to the university.
I practised the presentation on friends and neighbours with different professional interests.
