SUSY searches and particle flow reconstruction at ATLAS

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The student will conduct searches for SUSY particles with b-tagged jets at ATLAS, including searches for gluinos decaying via top squarks and bottom squarks decaying directly to the lightest SUSY particle. Later in the project the student will work on a new idea to improve ATLAS sensitivity to compressed SUSY scenarios using shape fits to exploit the universality of the squark/gluino effective mass distribution. The student will also work on validating and improving particle flow reconstruction in ATLAS, including both improvements to the existing particle flow jet reconstruction algorithm and the development of a new global particle flow paradigm. The student will also contribute to the calibration of b-tagged particle flow jets.
