Study of the Removal of Jet Engine Coatings by Water Jet Technology

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering

Abstract

This project arises from the necessity to remove the coating from the jet engine after a few years of use as their properties get deteriorated. This coating has been removed by traditional milling or chemical baths, techniques that are time consuming and not environmentally friendly. The Water Jet process offers a fast, effective and economical process just using plain water.
The main objectives of this project will be to develop a mathematical model that will predict the path and depth of a four-jet swivel nozzle. Moreover, a study will be done to optimize the parameters of jet engine coating striping process without damaging the substrate, considering the surface integrity and material removal mechanisms. Finally, the technology will be demonstrated in a real application
