Image Processing techniques to create a reference repository for characterisation & analysis of striation marks to support Forensic Investigations

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: WMG

Abstract

The aim of the project is to establish whether; i) micro-CT is an appropriate imaging technique for tool mark analysis, ii) tool marks statistically differ when created with different tools, iii) tool mark width can predict tool blade width, and iv) tool marks differ if created under different methodological conditions. When these research questions have been answered, the objective of the project is to develop a single database repository of characteristics, which can be accessed by Law Enforcement during a Criminal Investigation. The project will also explore the use of 3D printing and Additive Technology to support the Criminal Justice System and presentation of evidence.

The Project aligns with the following EPSRC research areas:
Medical Imaging
Image and Vision Computing
Manufacturing Technologies
Statistics and Applied Probability
