Quantitative In-situ measurement of chemical species in an enlectrochemical environment using vibrational spectroscopy

Abstract

Quantification of chemical and biochemical species is vital for understanding underpinning processes in-situ as well as developing related measurement solutions. Vibrational spectroscopy techniques such as Raman and infra-red spectroscopy are commonly used as a non-destructive methods. However, these measurements are strongly influenced by the surrounding environment of a species. The PhD studentship will investigate the influence of an electrochemical environment on Raman and IR spectral signatures in chemical and biochemical measurements particularly for quantitative analysis. The method will be applied primarily for biological systems. Other possible scenarios where the electrochemical environment influences the Raman and IR measurements will be explored. Once developed, these will enable development of a range of technologies including fast and low cost point of care diagnostics of diseaseas and advanced materials for energy storage.
