Abstract

DTP PhD studentship in Global Language-Based Area Studies:
For PhD study I am very keen to carry on looking at the cultural policies, cultural diplomacy, and cultural relations the UK's devolved administrations have in relation to China.
As my previous work has focused on England's and Scotland's China-related policies, I would greatly welcome the opportunity to direct attention towards Wales and a much more
substantial project - such as the one this studentship offers. Wales is just at the beginning of their cultural relationship with China, and as such this studentship offers a unique
opportunity to produce a substantial piece of research that is able to wholly capture, collate, and document Wales' efforts in this arena, whilst also following their current projects as they evolve. As my research proposal sets out, I am particularly interested in pursuing research that looks at the methodologies we use to analyse the impact and effectiveness of this sort of - often intangible - work. I believe this interest aligns well with the studentship's focus on Welsh cultural exchanges with China, and their adherence to the UNESCO 2005 convention on cultural diversity. One of my main research questions pertains to the feasibility of an individual nation's ability to simultaneously adhere to the altruistic aims of the convention, and the egotistic ambitions of cultural diplomacy.
