A fundamental investigation into high-speed jet hydrodynamic field

Abstract

As air traffic continues its long-term growth, aviation authorities are imposing increasingly stringent noise regulations, making the field of jet noise a timely and interesting area both for the aerospace industry as well as the scientific community. Despite the significant amount of research that has been carried out and the progress made in reducing jet noise during the past few decades, changes in the design of jet engines have brought about new aeroacoustic phenomena that remain poorly understood. This project aims to expand on the existing knowledge of the physics underlying the jet noise generation mechanism, through a comprehensive theoretical and experimental investigation of the dynamics and acoustics of isolated as well as installed subsonic jets. The possibility of passively or actively manipulating the jet flow field, the energy cascade in the jet plume and the flow instabilities to achieve near-field and far-field noise reduction will also be investigated. The results of this research are expected to be of high-impact and be published in the field's top journals.
