Searching for signals of Beyond Standard Model Physics at the Atlas detector of the Large Hadron Collider.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Operation of Atlas produces petabytes of data per year, and storage on the exabyte scale will be required for the upcoming "High Luminosity" upgrade. The Standard Model of particle physics has so far been found sufficient to describe all observed effects. However, the sensitivity of many current searches is not limited by data quantity, but by the computational expense of its accurate interpretation in the context of physical models - both of the detector and the universe of which it is a part.
The project focuses on use of probability theory to analyse proton scattering data, beginning with a focus on events suspected to include the decay of a Higgs boson to two tau leptons. Unconstrained aspects of the decay model are to be marginalised through Monte Carlo integration with Nested Sampling.
