Description Project industrial partner
Organisation Algaia
Country France
Sector Private
PI Contribution The overall aim of the project is to valorise the company's alginate extraction waste, adding value to their production process, diversifying their portfolio and reducing their carbon footprint. This would be achieved by identifying high value compounds that have the potential to be used for the treatment of obesity.
Collaborator Contribution Algaia hosted a 6 week industrial placement at their R&D facility in St-Lô, France. During this time the student had the opportunity to learn about seaweed specimen selection, the process of extracting valuable compounds from seaweeds, seaweed extract characterisation, as well as day to day operation of the company.
Impact Oral presentation at the 23rd International Seaweed Symposium 28 April -3 May, 2019 Title: By-products from seaweed industry as source of anti-obesity bio-actives: a preliminary in vitro study to compare extracts from three seaweed species. Poster presentation at the IBioIC annual conference, 5-6 February, 2020 Title: Antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of seaweed extracts from industrial alginate production waste for the treatment of obesity. Poster presentation at the British Pharmacological Conference, 14-18 December, 2020. Title: Treatment of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes with polyphenol rich extract from Fucus serratus reduces expression of genes linked to adipogenesis - PPAR?, C/EBPa and FABP4.

Results and Impact I gave an interview for a STEM engagement video talking about my PhD project at Robert Gordon University, as part of a series aiming to encourage children to get more involved with STEM subjects. I talked about the basis of my research, as well as the issue of obesity as a whole. The video was distributes to school in the Aberdeen area, as well as the Aberdeen Science Centre and their broader network.
