Abstract

The use of digital media for the consumption and distribution of Intellectual Property is now common placed. For example Spotify in January 2018 had some 70 million paying customers, (Statista, 2018b) and Netflix had had increasing worldwide subscribers since Q3 2011, with some 125 million worldwide subscribers in Q1 2018. (Statista, 2018a) There has been similar increases in the use of electronic books compared to printed books, and the move of computer software (including games) from being distributed via physical media to electronic distribution platforms such as Steam.
With this backdrop of digital media consumption, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) holders have had to innovate in how they protect their Intellectual Property. Particularly as digital copies can be made and distributed quickly and easily with no quality degradation. This has led to the introduction of Digital Rights Management (DRM) implementation. While there are variations with how these implementations are achieved they, all give a consumer a licence and a copy of the media to use.
