Hydrocarbon source identification through mineral magnetism: Beatrice Oilfield, Inner Moray Firth, North Sea

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Earth Science and Engineering

Abstract

I'm identifying and using magnetic minerals formed and associated with hydrocarbon formation and migration in an attempt to identify migration pathways, sources and source kitchen locations of the Beatrice Oilfield in the Inner Moray Firth, North Sea. Through extensive seismic survey interpretation and basin modelling in one-, two- and three-dimensions, as well as laboratory testing of samples from the field itself, potential migration pathways and potential source kitchens, I'm aiming to track hydrocarbon movement out of the source kitchens and into the reservoir. This should help us unravel the complex history of the Moray Firth and assist any future hydrocarbon discoveries in the area, whilst the magnetics research will hopefully help us further understand the connection between hydrocarbons and magnetic minerals so they can be used as a future exploration technique.
