Broadband Wireless over Fibre for Next Generation Communications

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Abstract

This PhD project will investigate the use of optical fibre, photonics and digital signal processing for delivering next generation broadband wireless communication signals such as 5G. Specifically, the student will investigate a method for transmitting broadband wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) signals over optical fibre using novel digital signal processing techniques. Photonic sampling, digitisation and reconstruction of such signals will be the key research elements. Comparison will be made with the traditional transmission of analogue signals over fibre. This research project is directly relevant to the EPSRC theme of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), in particular the areas of RF & Microwave Communications as well as Optical Communications.

Description A novel MIMO signals over fibre transmission technique is proposed and achieved.
It mainly focuses to improve 5G (5th generation) network. Improvements in 5G technology is important because it has the potential to support millions of devices at ultrafast speeds and the potential to transform the lives of people around the world.

For example, 5G brings latency low enough to provide real-time information either to deliver live HD video to a paramedic or to enable remote surgery. The main benefit of the used technique is that digital techniques were used for signal processing which allow a simpler and more flexible reconfiguration. MIMO which stands for multiple input multiple output is an antenna technology for wireless communications in which multiple antennas are used at both the source (transmitter) and the destination (receiver). Fully analogue MIMO techniques can be replaced with suggested method and their functions can be performed by the digital software which has less complexity and cost.
Exploitation Route We are in stage of writing a paper. It will help researcher for future work on the same field. As I mentioned earlier this project mainly focuses to improve 5G (5th generation) network. Therefore, it can be used in new network technology.
