Visual Extremism Online: A Discursive News Values Analysis of Social Media Images from Radical Right Groups

Lead Research Organisation: Swansea University
Department Name: College of Arts and Humanities

Abstract

Keighley's project will examine how radical right wing groups in the UK operate on social media to promote their news values and ideologies. She will employ a DNVA analysis to examine how radical right wing groups thrive on social media. Her work will explicate how the creation of imagined political communities serves to create a radical right wing identity by fostering the construction of alterity which functions to legitimate the voice of radical right wing groups. Keighley's work is the first study of its kind and has significant potential to inform future discussions and training within the UK Prevent strategy.
