Breaking down barriers: An ethnographic study into the barriers to exiting homelessness

Lead Research Organisation: Cardiff University
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

The aim of the PhD project is to understand why and how people are unable to exit homelessness, despite having accessed support via temporary accommodation. Through ethnographic research, the study aims to study the everyday individual and group experiences of temporarily accommodated homeless individuals, the challenges they face and how they experience the transition from rough sleeping to supported accommodation. The PhD project will be particularly focused on how barriers to exiting homelessness are maintained and negotiated but also constructed and perceived. The project will focus particularly on the experience of the interaction between macro-level (e.g. access to support) and micro-level (e.g. mental health, substance use) barriers and will result in policy recommendations to ease transitions out of homelessness.
