Dynamics of Fractional Quantum Hall States

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

Despite decades of study some of the basic physics of fractional quantum Hall states is still poorly understood. While it is know, for example, that a holographic principle exists and the quantum numbers of the bulk much match those of the edge, the nonuniversal properties of the dynamical edges are hard to predict. For example, even in the Laughlin edge, there remains debate about the proper form of the low energy theory away from the renormalization group fixed point. The content of this project is to further elucidate the bulk-edge correspondence and determine the dynamical physics of fractional quantum hall edge states. Ideally these results will be relevant to recent experiments on quantum hall edges that have not been fully undertstood.
