Intelligent product-service systems in smart cities: Advancing co-design and systems engineering practices

Lead Research Organisation: Loughborough University

Abstract

Project description (max. 4000 characters) This project aims to advance co-design, software and systems engineering practices in complex and multi-disciplinary project environments: specifically, Product-Service Systems (PSS) for smart cities. The research will adopt a systems-of-systems perspective and utilise novel quantitative and qualitative methods. Evidencing what works (or does not work) and why is particularly challenging due to; the variety of specialist and multi-disciplinary roles required on projects, the pace of technological change in Internet of Things (IoT) environments and complex human factors in socio-technical systems. What works in one project, organisational context or city may not work well in others, for example, studying how requirements are generated and stakeholders are managed within agile co-design and development environments that incorporate non-specialists (i.e. citizens) and other end-users of intelligent products and services. Another key area for investigation is the incorporation of business stakeholder and policy maker requirements into the process of refining designs and prototype solutions for real-world intelligent product-service systems in our future cities.
