Assessing geochemical approaches to removing CO2 from the atmosphere

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University

Abstract

This is a PhD research project in Chemical Engineering. Ocean alkalinisation, which describes several approaches that all ultimately increase ocean alkalinity to enhance CO2 sequestration in seawater, are some of the more promising emerging NETs (Renforth and Henderson, 2017). However, process understanding, e.g., dissolution kinetics of minerals, and environmental impact knowledge of these approaches are incomplete. The PhD we will conduct a series of experiments at different scales and complexities to generate a robust data base on the stability of alkalinity in seawater. This will also include developing engineering approaches for increasing ocean alkalinity.
