PhD in plutonium stockpile immobilisation: Investigating the effectiveness of using Ce, U and Th as surrogates for plutonium

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Materials Science and Engineering

Abstract

The aim of this project s to develop scientific underpinning for application of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) to disposition of Pu residues and stockpile.

The objectives are to:
Fabricate candidate glass/ceramic wasteforms by HIP under controlled pO2
Characterise the partitioning and redox behaviour of Ce, U & Th as Pu surrogates
Establish the solid solution mechanisms of Ce, U & Th and their effectiveness as surrogates.

The project will also support NDA strategy for deployment of thermal treatment technologies.
