Field Testing MEMS gravimeters

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

This studentship will focus on developing Wee-g as a viable field portable MEMS gravimeter. The
device will utilise technology developed during our phase 2 PRF with KelvinNanoTechnology and
Optocap to test vacuum packaged MEMS gravimeter. Coupled with an FPGA readout, the system
will be capable of self-levelling and logging data either to an SD card, or piping through a
Bluetooth/RS232 module.
The studentship will perform a number of field trials with Wee-g. We will utilise the Boulbly mine
(STFC particle astrophysics facility in North-East England) to perform seismic survey/gravity
surveying of the mine. Together with Bridgeporth, we will analyse the data, possibly using the
output from multiple sensors to provide some initial gravity inversion data. We will then perform 2
sets of field trials on Mt Etna, with support from travel/consumables coming from our parallel FETOPEN
award. The final set of data will further utilise expertise from Bridgeporth to provide some
gravity inversion of the datasets.
