Feminist Archival Pedagogy: Youth-Led Transmission and Transformation for Feminist Futures

Over the last decade we have seen a youth-led resurgence of feminist activism in the UK making powerful interventions into new and enduring inequalities. Vitally, this resurgence has frequently adopted a focus on the intersectional nature of race and gender (Crenshaw, 1989; 1991) and has affirmed trans rights (Bragg et al., 2018). Whether online, in moments of protest or through the growing number of feminist clubs in schools, young people are increasingly speaking out about the sexism and gender injustices they witness in their everyday lives (Kim and Ringrose, 2018; Ringrose and Renold, 2016; Keller, 2015). However, post-feminist sensibilities which assume that gender equality has been achieved and feminism is rendered obsolete continue to impede the transmission of intergenerational feminist knowledge in educational practice (Angela McRobbie, 2015 p. 16; 2009; Gill, Kelan and Scharff, 2017; Rottenburg, 2018; Kim and Ringrose, 2018). This research will address these issues by harnessing the power of feminist archival pedagogy to open up collaborative and creative ways of researching feminist cultural history with young people in order to facilitate new forms of feminist, intergenerational and trans-cultural learning.
