New iridium-based catalysis methods for C-C, C-N, and C-O bond formation

Abstract

This collaboration between GSK and the University of Strathclyde is based on an overarching and sustained relationship that has successfully opened new pathways towards research growth and two-directional knowledge exchange. Professor Kerr holds expertise in the area of catalysis and organic synthesis, and has a proven track record in developing methods that are of particular use within the pharmaceutical industry. Specifically, Kerr has developed a growing range of iridium(I) catalysts, which have emerged to become some of the most active species in the area of labelling chemistry and now show promise in their ability to perform C-C, C-N, and C-O bond-forming reactions. GSK's complementary expertise in identifying relevant pharmaceutical targets and desirable molecular architectures for application of the emerging new methods will result in a fruitful research endeavour.
As part of the overall programme of work, computationally-driven methods will be used to deliver enhanced understanding of catalyst design and mechanism of action, as well as expansion of emerging reaction scope.
The main EPSRC research areas addressed are Catalysis, Chemical Reaction Dynamics and Mechanism, and Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
