Origins of the English Landscape - Swine, Pannage and Droveways

This study applies a new perspective to understanding the origins of the English countryside, through the detailed analysis of archaeological pig remains from Anglo-Saxon sites. Central to this study is the interpretation of pig husbandry practices within their landscape context, achieved by combining methods from zooarchaeology and landscape archaeology. Additionally, this study will identify the presence of wild pig within assemblages, and explore the hunting of boar as an expression of power in Anglo-Saxon society.
