Applications of thin silicon to curved vertexing and tracking detectors using silicon strip and CMOS sensor technology

Lead Research Organisation: Queen Mary University of London
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

This project focuses on the applications of cylindrical detectors to vertexing and tracking systems, focusing initially on the developments of detector modules using DC-coupled silicon strip detectors. Later in the studies, the project will shift up a gear to move on to the CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor technology from a well know sensor developed by the RAL TD Microelectronics group in order to fully demonstrate the capability for the realisation of large area low mass tracking systems for the next generation of particle and nuclear physics detector. The methodologies developed through this project have commercial applications and while not the main focus of the thesis, some exploration of the commercial context of this work will be explored, for example through market survey contributions or through performing patent searches in order to further develop the student's knowledge, skills and experience.
