Abstract

1 Brief description of the context of the research including potential impact

The development of new acquisition methods and analysis methods for hyperpolarised 129-xenon MRI, focusing on the development of methods to quantify epithelial gas transfer rates.

2 Aims and Objectives

-The specific objectives are to:

Design and implement novel 129-Xe MRI acquisition methods for preclinical and clinical measurement of epithelial gas transfer rates in the lung and the bowel

Design and implement novel analysis methods to model 129-Xe signals to determine gas transfer rates in the lung and the bowel

To define a general framework/platform for epithelial function measurements using 129-Xe MRI

3 Novelty of Research Methodology

New methods of image acquisition for 129-Xe in the lungs will be developed

129-Xe MRI in the bowel has not to date been reported in either preclinical or clinical settings.

A general platform for epithelial function measurement using 129-Xe MRI has not previously been described.
