Global warming and modelling the future of ice caps in Iceland

Lead Research Organisation: Northumbria University
Department Name: Fac of Engineering and Environment

Abstract

The results of this research project would enable a greater understanding of the relationship between ice sheet dynamics, ocean and atmosphere in Iceland. This knowledge can then contribute to a wider understanding on the controls of global sea level rise and gain insight to the dynamics and behaviour of larger ice sheets such as Greenland and Antarctica. It is ultimately hoped that this research will strengthen predictions of ice caps and ice sheets response to climate change. | The research objectives of this paper would be
1. Assess the impact of seasonal variation on ice flow velocity
2. Investigate the influence of calving on overall glacier dynamics
3. Model future ice flow of Hofsjökull ice cap
4. Validate model outcomes with existing data
5. Estimate uncertainty in predictions of future ice loss due to uncertainty in parameters
