Use of tailored hydrodynamic conditions to trigger reactions by drop coalescence in microfluidic devices

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Chemical Engineering

Abstract

Microfluidic systems offer many advantages for tight control of reaction conditions enabling improved selectivity and yield. This project will exploit recent work on control of droplet mixing using a combination of surface active species to induce Marangoni flows at the interfaces between drops as they coalesce. The interplay between the timescales of species absorption and surface relaxation will be investigated to enable novel methods of controlling the reaction environment.
