Neutron background estimate and suppression for Dark Matter searches with LZ detector

Abstract

The LZ is a 2nd generation Dark Matter search experiment located in South
Dakota (USA). It will be collecting data for several years. The Liverpool group
is responsible for Optical Calibration System for Outer Detector, analysis
framework and Data Quality Monitoring, and leading neutron background
study. During his PhD, Sam will develop new algorithms for long-term Data
Quality Monitoring, cross-calibrate Outer Detector and Time Projection
Chamber, estimate neutron background for Dark Matter searches which are
expected to be the most sensitive for WIMP signatures in 10s of GeV mass
range. He will develop novel approaches to suppression of the neutron
background which should be efficient from one side but minimise the dead
time from the other side. This development will be based on good
understanding of the detector operation and physics processes in the
detector. Sam will investigate machine learning approaches to the neutron
background estimates and suppression.
