Precision agriculture with AI and drone-based imagery

Lead Research Organisation: Loughborough University
Department Name: School of Science

Abstract

UAV photogrammetry has become popular for monitoring and analysis
purposes in the context of precision agriculture. A GPS enabled UAV
for aerial surveying is a cost-effective way to gain a holistic view
of the agricultural land to monitor e.g. the flooding situation after
a storm, moisture content in crops, growth conditions of crops, crop diseases etc. In this project, we will develop novel image analysis
algorithms to provide a timely understanding of the monitored crop
fields with the use of low computational power consuming devices.
Furthermore, we will investigate a collaborative robotic network to
combine the strengths of UAV aerial imagery, remote sensing imagery,
land robots and IoT sensor networks for precision agriculture. This
collaborative network will not only be able to gain comprehensive
information of the agricultural land but also provide operation-level
solutions for planning and management of crop fields.
