Novel superlattices with more than two-layer unit cells, for higher sensitivity infrared imaging

Abstract

The PhD's aim is to improve the overall performance of an InAs/InAsSb superlattice photodetector for applications in the infrared regime. This is to be achieved by modelling, designing and experimentally growing devices with additional layers in the superlattice. These devices can then be processed in the clean room at Lancaster University and then characterised in the labs there such that the entire device development process can be undertaken in house. This project forms a part of the long-standing collaboration between Lancaster University and Leonardo UK Ltd.
The PhD student will have monthly contact with the industrial contact/supervisor. They will provide brief monthly progress updates and receive comment, guidance and advice in return. On a quarterly schedule, more detailed summaries of work will be shared with Leonardo, and discussed. In person visits are planned approximately every 6 months, pandemic and restrictions permitting. In the 2nd or 3rd year of the PhD, a period of time working on site at Leonardo is envisaged. Details of work to be carried out will be fixed once the evolutionary direction of the project is clear. However, possibilities include electro-optical material characterisation to complement characterisation undertaken at Lancaster, such as time resolved PL, or array characterisation to gain experience in operation of the final target device.
Successful completion of the PhD is not contingent on practical work at the industrial partner, either by company employees or the student.
