Novel laser-driven, short-wavelength light sources

Abstract
In this project, we aim to develop novel short-wavelength light sources, with a primary focus on the ultra-violet (UV) region of the spectrum. UV laser sources are scarce, and current options for nonlinear frequency conversion are limited. By addressing these challenges, we will open up exciting possibilities for bright, pulsed UV sources, including the field of free-space optical communications. The project encompasses two exciting avenues to develop novel UV sources, each holding great promise for ground-breaking results that can be published in top-tier journals. Firstly, we will explore the use of nanophotonic targets and metasurfaces illuminated by intense visible lasers to generate UV harmonic radiation. Secondly, we will investigate UV laser action in wide band-gap semiconductors through two-photon absorption pumping. While the project's primary focus lies in advancing our understanding of the fundamental physics involved, there will be opportunities to set up proof-of-principle experiments for real-world applications in communications using the developed UV sources.
