Transportation of hydrogen at scale in a safe, efficient and cost-effective way

Lead Research Organisation: Loughborough University
Department Name: Materials

Abstract

The EnerHy Centre for Doctoral Training will carry out research and training for the hydrogen economy to help achieve the UK and global Net Zero targets.

This project, based in the Department of Materials (Part of the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering) at Loughborough University. It will consider the challenges of designing, constructing and operating hydrogen pipeline infrastructure that will be fit for purpose for the next 40+ years. The research will consider all aspects of the pipeline lifecycle, from design, construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning. Initially an understanding of the limitations and opportunities of existing materials and pipelines infrastructure will be investigated and how they may be impacted by hydrogen. Later, new materials will be investigated to improve existing practice areas which may include but not limited to novel materials, composites and self-healing capabilities.
