Integrating Model-Based Systems Engineering with Business Strategies

Lead Research Organisation: Loughborough University
Department Name: Wolfson Sch of Mech, Elec & Manufac Eng

Abstract

This project is a collaboration between the Systems Engineering group in the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering, the Business School, and Rolls Royce Plc, to explore the application of Model-Based Systems Engineering to business strategies, both as a means through which strategy may be developed and implemented and as a facet of strategy to achieve digital transformation within the aerospace/defence business.
The research will consider the enacting of digital transformation from a technological and management perspective to determine the impacts on workforce and the people development that is required for successful transformation. This will be achieved by working with the Rolls Royce strategy team to develop models of strategic change.
The EngD programme includes training in Model-Based Systems Engineering in the form of five level 7 modules during the first year. This enables the research student to gain an in-depth knowledge of MBSE during the initial formulation of the detailed programme.
A second strand of the study concerns the digital approach that will support the factory of the future. This will influence the deployment of digital skills and technology within the sponsor as a part of business transformation.
